Rescheduling Travel games

Field Re-scheduler:  Stanley Miller

Greetings travel coaches,

I am the make-up travel game field re-scheduler for  6v6, 8v8, and 11v11 fields.  NYS and NGS are granted a fields permit from the Parks& Rec department for the use of Newton fields during specified times during the week each season.   To schedule makeup games, I have a field’s grid spreadsheet showing all games (Travel and IM) and practices (Travel only) per field, and a listing of each NYS and NGS Travel teams by age group, number and coach .

  This is an email process!

  1. Please email me Stanley Miller as soon as you know you need to reschedule a game.  Include the following in your request
    • a primary and secondary date and time.  These dates should already be agreed upon with the opposing coach!

      Available timeslots:
      Saturdays: 9:00, 10:30, 11:45, 1:00, 2:30, 4:00 and 5:30.
      Sundays: 1:00, 2:45, 4:30, and 6:00.
Weekdays: usually after 5:00PM -- but remember to consider sunset, depending on the time of year.

    • Your team number (from the coaches list)
    • Field size requested (6x6, 8x8 or 11x11)
    • Date, time and location of original field (the one you won’t be using) if rescheduling in advance of the original game date (pre-pone)
    • You may include a field preference, but it  is not required.
  2. I will send you an email with a new field assignment.  If neither your primary nor secondary requests are available,  I’ll recommend an alternate date and time as close as possible to one of your requests.  Please respond as soon as possible to accept the recommendation and commit the field for your makeup game.  Requests will be filled on a first come first serve basis.
  3. If I need to reschedule a game on a field where a practice is scheduled to take place, I will copy the “practicing coaches” on my email to the “rescheduling coach” confirming the new game time.  Thanks in advance for your flexibility!
  4. After a game date and time is confirmed, inform the original referee of the new date and time so they can accept the game change or you will have to request a new referee from the referee scheduler for your age group.

A listing of all NGS games and associated referee is kept at the Referee Page.

Remember, the closer you stick to the process, the easier it will be for us to meet your needs!  A few tips for a smoother process:

  • Keep requests simple and clear with team number plus dates and times.
  • Scheduling makeup games during your approved practice time and field is good, these requests will almost always be granted and I’ll move the other teams you practice with off the field.
  • Friday nights are very difficult to get a field as many teams practice that night.  Request these as a last resort.
  • For 11v11 makeup games, we may be able to use Forte field in Nonantum under the lights until 7:00 pm.  Parks&Rec must be called with the weekly schedule every Monday to get the lights turned on. Please inform the re-scheduler ahead of time.
  • If a makeup game cancels, even at the last minute, please Email as soon as you know, so I can use the field for another game.  This is especially true for the Forte field games where I have to inform the Parks&Rec not to turn the lights on.
  • Public schools use of the fields for their activities trump our games and practices.  I have no knowledge of their schedule or other leagues practice and game schedules.  If you find that you have conflicts, please calmly work things out at that time and send me feedback so I can stay away from the conflict.
  • When there is no alternative, I will move practices to schedule makeup games.  Coaches are responsible for finding a piece of the field or alternative location for practice (elementary schools).

High School Girls as Coaches

Newton Girls Soccer is always looking for high school girls interested in coaching our Intramural teams in grades 2-6. The league is also looking for a limited number of girls to help as assistant coaches with the younger age groups in our BAYS Travel Program. If you are a 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grader, you are eligible to volunteer as a coach or assistant coach with NGS.

The job is a rewarding one: It will allow you to work with the soccer skills you have learned and now use so effectively as a player, and will give you a chance to instruct our younger players, providing them and you with an outstanding soccer experience. As a coach, you will also serve as a role model for these younger players.

During the past four years, many high school girls have worked as coaches or assistant coaches. They really had a great time and a wonderful experience, and recommended highly that NGS continue to offer this program to all interested high school girls.  To volunteer, please fill out the coaching application below.  Applications should be submitted by September 1 for the Fall season or March 31 for the Spring season.

If you have any questions regarding the program or would like more information regarding this coaching opportunity, please call me (617-558-7578) or send me an email, providing me with any requests for grades preferred and/or the friends with whom you wish to be paired as coaches. We will be able to assign you to teams based upon your preferences and the openings available.

Coaching Qualifications (for IM or Travel)

In order to maintain a high level of coaching, we have developed the following requirements for being a head coach (HC) or assistant coach (AC) of an NGS team. Coaching a team includes teaching game skills, sportsmanship, team play, and other aspects of the game, as well as providing a high level of organization to the team both on and off the field. All parent coaches are requested to obtain at least a G level coaching license. The G level license, or comparable coaching experience is mandatory for the head coach of teams 2nd grade and beyond. Additionally, safety is a primary concern, and all coaches must be screened and file a CORI form.

Parent coaches are assigned to their daughter’s team. When several parents volunteer to coach the same team, the head coach will be chosen based on proven coaching experience, coaching education level and commitment to youth sports. Note that because we are an all-girls league, preference is always given to female coaches when their qualifications are otherwise identical to those of a male volunteer.

Eligibility and Order of Preference for all NGS Coaches:

  1. Parent, guardian, or grandparent of a player
  2. Female community members (e.g., college players, former players, etc.)
  3. High School girls coaching a team without any sibling on it (exceptions can be made, on a case by case basis, with more than 5 year age gap between player and high school sibling)

MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct

All coaches are expected to abide by the MYSA Coaches Code of Conduct (click here to view). NGS reserves the right to discipline, suspend or remove any coach for failure to follow the Code.

Coach Development

As of Spring 2006, NGS has introduced the new position of
Director of Coaching
Please read all about it here.

NGS maintains a coaches development program within the Coaches committee. This program includes instructional clinics, licensing courses, a mentoring program and an excellent selection of coaching materials and videos at the Newton-Main Library. The goal of this program is to maintain and enhance the coaching skills of both new and seasoned coaches.

Tournament feedback

Starting in the Spring of 2003, the NGS training committee collected feedback from various NGS coaches about regional tournaments they may have attended.  Click here to see the compilation of their comments.  If you have additional comments to add, please email Lisa Howe.  (This information hasn't really been updated since 2003.)

Practice fields

Every coach should submit a practice field request form.  Before submitting your request, please check with your players' families, if that is part of your process, to insure that the submitted request will work with everyone's schedules. Because field space is always at a premium, please note that we are asking for your top three preferences for field location. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but not everyone can get the first choices. (If you want to maximize the chances of getting a first choice, select a Tuesday or Thursday practice.) Be sure to fill out the form completely and especially indicate any special circumstances our assignors need to know. Don't forget to click on the "submit request" button at the bottom of the form. You will be informed about your assigned fields as soon as possible via email.
